A.K.Collection: Coin ID A40 from Lot no. 1140

Gordian III AD 238-244. Antoninianus (AR; 21-22mm; 5.37g; 7h) 4th issue, January 1st 241 – end of July 243. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian to right. Rev. P M T-R P VI COS II P P Apollo, bare to waist, seated left, holding branch in right hand and resting left elbow on lyre. Rare.

Curiously enough, the portrait on this coin appears to be that of a young Gordian III and is rather more youthful than others from this issue. Could it have come from an obsolete master die?

C. 272; RIC IV, III p. 25, 90.

From the stock of E. Beckenbauer Munich 1967.
